Over mountains and sky blue seasThe first 2 lines of Josh's new song, Hidden Away. Though the immediate description fits that of a vulture preying from high above, the song developes into more than a metaphor as it goes on.
On great circles will you watch for me...
...The sweetest feeling I've got insideIt seems almost too obvious that this song portrays some sort of a Long Distance relationship, perhaps a soldier and his wife, or just two lovers frustrated with distance. As if we need the reminder....?
I just can't wait to get lost in your eyes
And all these words that you meant to say
Held in silence day after day...
Josh lends his solid falsetto to this track dipping into its strength and diversity quite often. It gives you the sense that you're on a melodic journey that accompanies Josh's lyrics.
The downside of this track: It is a little hard to grasp a solid idea as to what's to come from both the song and the new album. It seems that in his efforts to stretch his abilities, he's stretched the idea of 'musical thought'. I feel as though, we are the waiting party and Josh is the vulture (at the beginning of his track) and we are waiting desperately for him to come back down.
The leaps to falsetto are surprising, though not necessarily unpleasant, just not as graceful as his voice suggests, and I think the subject matter is over done; Josh is getting type-cast into this male crooner that gives women what the other guys lack. It preys on the vulnerability we all feel at times and I think it's a cheap marketing ploy.
All-in-all, Josh's voice is soooooolid and just gotten better with age, bit the material is lacking and unorginial. I am curious about what is to come from this new album.
